Violence within families is rare but serious.  If you have concerns about a family member's violent behaviors and potential for escalation, consider reaching out to one of the many resources at your disposal.

Resources Outside The Military

If you're in immediate danger, call 911.  Your local police department can provide support and safety during a crisis.  They are trained to handle emergency situations and defuse violent altercations.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers 24/7 phone support at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) and chat options through www.thehotline.org.  Their trained advocates provide confidential support and can help you sort through questions about unhealthy aspects of your relationship.

The National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453 is also staffed 24/7 with professional crisis counselors.  They provide confidential intervention, information, literature, and referral information in over 170 languages.  More information about their services can be found on www.childhelp.org/hotline/.

The Joyful Heart Foundation website (http://www.joyfulheartfoundation.org/learn) offers information on sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and vicarious trauma.  The foundation runs retreats and wellness days for survivors of violence.

RAINN—the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network—runs a 24/7 hotline at 1-800-6565-HOPE (4673) and they have live chat services online at https://hotline.rainn.org/online/terms-of-service.jsp.  RAINN also partners with local sexual assault service providers so you can get follow-up assistance within your community.

Resources Within The Military

Family Advocacy Programs (FAP) works to prevent domestic and child abuse by providing counseling, treatment groups, and educational resources.  They offer classes, workshops, and seminars to help prevent the escalation of violence in families as well as advocacy for victims. Find your FAP by visiting MilitaryINSTALLATIONS or exploring the following sites:

MilitaryOneSource is also available around the clock to answer questions about reporting options and support services. They can be reached at 1-800-342-9647 and can connect you with your local FAP or a Military Family Life Counselor.

Real Warriors Live Chat connects you with a trained health resource consultant who can answer questions and guide you to additional resources in your area.  Reach the Outreach Center via Live Chat online or by phone at 1-866-966-1020.

Unit Chaplains are another resource available within the military.  Unit Chaplains can provide confidential counseling services about marriage and family concerns.  They are available to visit with Operators/Enablers and their families and provide religious guidance.

Smartphone apps developed by DoD can help you and your family members.  For example, you can learn more about how PTSD and TBI impact health and behavior.

The DoD Child Abuse and Safety Violation Hotline is available at 1-877-790-1197.  This is not a crisis hotline.  Instead, it's a place to report concerns about child abuse or neglect in a DoD child or youth program or school.
